Professor Coleman is the Deputy Director of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and Chief Investigator for the Antarctic Gateway Partnership.
He has over 25 years’ experience as a researcher and academic in the Australian university sector. He has held positions at the Research School of Earth Sciences, The Australian National University, The University of Sydney, and from January 1993 at the University of Tasmania – where he also held a joint appointment with CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research.
From March 2004-July 2009, he was Professor of Marine Science and Director of the Centre for Marine Science at UTAS, and also the Director of the joint CSIRO-UTAS PhD Program in Quantitative Marine Science.His research covers the areas of geodesy, physical oceanography and glaciology, focusing on understanding the role of the oceans and cryosphere in the global climate system using observations, theory and modelling, with more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Professor Coleman is a program leader for the ACE CRC’s R1.2 project.
