The University of Tasmania’s Waterfront Building has a 5-star energy rating

The three-level facility brings together much of Tasmania’s considerable strengths in marine and Antarctic studies under one roof, offering opportunities for collaborative research of international significance.

The three-level facility brings together scientists from a number of different agencies, including the ACE CRC, the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Science (IMAS), and the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS).  It is adjacent to the CSIRO marine research building and offers outstanding opportunities for collaborative research.

The building houses five purpose-built laboratories, a large public exhibition area, teaching laboratories, boardroom, a 92 seat lecture theatre and a scenic staff dining area overlooking the Port of Hobart and Mount Wellington.

The building has been designed to be efficient and inspiring, flexible and adaptable and promote internal and external public interaction. The design is sympathetic to the important history of the area and its former and current maritime uses.

It provides teaching and research facilities for around 290 staff and students, a stone’s throw from bustling Salamanca Place.
